About our Instructor Joy
Yoga is a study of body, mind and spirit, where you learn about the nature of your true self. Though often thought of as only a physical practice, its true purpose is to help one achieve liberation and divine self connection. Staying true to Yoga’s original intent, Joy’s classes are rooted in classical Hatha Yoga teachings, and are designed to help you explore, connect and deeply enjoy the experience of being fully present to yourself through movement, mind and breathe. Joy is a certified AyurvedicYoga Specialist (AYS) and Certified Yoga Instructor. She has over 20 years of personal experience and training in both Yoga and Ayurveda. She has been teaching studio classes and private students since 2012. Joy lives her life as an embodied yogi and practicing ayurvedist, and LOVES teaching and sharing the rich transformative practices of these two ancient wisdoms.

Ayurvedic Yoga Planning:
Ayurveda, which means “The Science of Life” is a vast system of natural health and healing, and is a sister science to Yoga. Ayurveda encompasses an integrative mind body approach to wellness that is centered on lifestyle and living in harmony with the natural world. An individualized yoga practice is one of methods Ayurveda uses to help us stay balanced, healthy and improve our overall well being.
According to Ayurveda, the building blocks of nature, life, in fact all matter in the universe is comprised of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Each element has specific qualities and energetic patterns. The elements combine to form three constitutional types or doshas—Vata (ether and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Everyone is born with an unique combination of all three doshas, usually having one dosha as the dominant force. Your inherent doshic constitution is your optimal elemental baseline and determines your body type, physical characteristics and also your emotional and mental tendencies.
One of the main goals of Ayurveda is to optimize health and wellbeing by keeping doshas in balance. Due to lifestyle and environmental factors, doshas are in a constant ebb and flow of balance and imbalance. Ayurvedic theory tells us that every season in nature, stage of life, time of day, our senses, internal organs, and even yoga postures, all correspond to a specific dosha. When designing an Ayurvedic Yoga Plan, Joy takes all those factors into account to create a personalized yoga practice customized to your individual doshic needs, which will include a complete daily practice of specific asana (postures) pranayama (breathe work) and meditation techniques.
